Juneteenth is a U.S. holiday that marks the end of slavery and honors African American culture and achievements. It is named after June 19, 1865, when Union troops freed the last enslaved people in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth on the East is a celebration that takes place on or around June 19 on the east side of Oklahoma City. The event features live music, a 5k run, interactive murals, dance shows, spoken word, food trucks and local small businesses. You can enjoy the performances of local artists, support black-owned businesses and learn more about the history of emancipation and civil rights in Oklahoma.
With Love OKC and local community leaders, including Jabee, Oklahoma Mural Syndicate and Red Coyote Running and Fitness, organize the event. The event happens on NE 23, which they will close between Kelham Avenue and Hood Street for the event.
