Calling all MUSEUM LOVERS!! If you are new to the area, I have some great suprises for you. And if you are a local and have lived here for years, you may not have realized OKC Metro’s BEST Museums are right in your backyard!
I’m here with a list of some pretty amazing places that you are going to want to add to your list of field trips this year! There are several museums in and around the OKC Metro, so here’s a list of my favorite art/interactive museums to check out.
OKC Metro’s BEST Museums: Oklahoma City Museum of Art
First on my list is the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA). This is a beautiful museum in downtown OKC. This museum displays over 5 centuries of art. There is also a significant amount of European and American art to be found.
One of my FAV things about this museum is the jaw dropping glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly. It is spectacular! I also love the museum shop and the Museum Cafe, which offers delicious American cuisine with a little bit of a French twist.
OKC Metro’s BEST Museums: National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
You can’t come to the OKC Metro and not visit The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. It definitely makes the list. For one, it’s huge! It is a massive 200,00 square feet. This is THE museum to visit if you are a fan, lover, learner or admirer of the American West and its arts & crafts.
The museum opened in 1955. It takes approximately 2-4 hours to go through the museum and artwork is rotated frequently, which is a plus for local fans.
OKC Metro’s BEST Museums: Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum
The Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum is undoubtedly part of the list. In addition to being a Museum, it also serves as a memorial paying tribute to all of the victims, survivors, rescuers and all of the countless human beings affected by the April 19, 1995 bombing in downtown Oklahoma City.
At a minimum, it is a very somber experience, if not an emotional one. I have personally shed some tears the numerous times I have visited the memorial. The Survivor Tree and the reflecting pond outside add to the beauty of the location and considered a quiet place for reflection.
OKC Metro’s BEST Museums: Science Museum of Oklahoma
The Science Museum of Oklahoma makes the list of OKC Metro’s BEST Museums because it is great for the whole family and an ideal environment for young people to learn. In fact, one of my favorite things about the Science Museum of Oklahoma is all of the important programs it has for young people (Teen Apprentice Program) and children as young as 3 years old (STEAM)!
OKC Metro’s BEST Museums: Factory Obscura- Mix-Tap
Last, but not least on our list is Factory Obscura. I am going to confidently say this will be one of the most unique and unusual museums you will probably visit. In fact, it is technically an “art collective.” An it is located just off of Automobile Alley near downtown OKC.
What I like the most about Factory Obscura is that it is an interactive art experience. It’s more than just looking at art. It’s experiencing it as “immersive art.” It has been describes as exhibits that you walk through, not walk by and actually explore.
So there you have it! My list of BEST museums in the OKC Metro. Join me for other “reads” regarding the BEST the OKC Metro has to offer. Or check out my Weekly Events to stay up today on all of the happenings in the OKC Metro area.
